Water Floods, Fire Floods, Tar Pits, etc.
!969 Los Angeles -Toured Field Offices,
Paleo Lab, Research Center, Headquarters, Radio Studios for PR.
When I graduated from High School,
Union Oil employed me every summer and part-time while at Univ. of
Southern Calif. (USC) for 4 years.
1970 Coalinga Oil Field,
(Roustabout/Mechanics Asst.) maintenance of evaporation ponds,
Gas Compressors and Gas Plant, Pipeline Maintenance, Asst. to Field
Operators and Mechanics.
1971 Los Angeles County – (Geol.
Asst.) maintained Urban Production Sites, cleaned up oil spills
around Gas Lift Operations, Gas Separators, Heater Treaters, Gas
Compressor valves and worked as Researcher and Archivist in
Headquarters library.
1972 – Huntington Beach (Field
Operator) at Offshore Platform Eva – monitored Supervisory
Control and Data Acquisition [SCADA] systems and alarm events.
Measured pressure, volume, and temperature of 36 wells and a drilling
rig. Determined percent Basic Sediments and Water [BS&W] in
centrifuge and API Gravity in oils using hydrometer. Injected
anti-corrosion chemicals into pipes and ran pigs monthly to clean
pipelines, repaired wastewater pumps and gauged tank volumes.
1973 - Los Angeles (Field Operator
2) replaced downhole electric pumps and repaired pipelines and
valves. (Paleo Lab Technician) Prepared subsurface drill
cuttings for lithology descriptions and identifications of
microfossils including foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils.
At the end of 4 years with UNOCAL, I
was told that they could not hire me because I had changed my college
major from Petroleum Engineering to Geology without their permission.
TEXACO
1974 – New Orleans (Geologist/
Micropaleontologist) correlated electric logs and contoured structure
maps and recommended infill well locations in fault blocks and
stratigraphic traps. Utilized seismic data and satellite imagery
along with gravity, magnetic and porosity maps to recommend wildcat
well locations with giant oil field potential. Created
paleo-environmental maps to predict the depth of over-pressured shale
throughout the Gulf Coast.
1975 Ark-La-Tex (Biostratigrapher)
Described lithology, identified microfossils and interpreted
paleo-environments from drill cuttings. Trained geologists on
well-site supervision and examined samples under microscope to
identify depth for casing points to avoid blowouts. Participated in
Carbonate Seminar spelunking in Carlsbad, NM and snorkeling in the
Bahamas. Conducted Delta Training School by seaplane in
S. Louisiana for geologists and geophysicists.
OCCIDENTAL PETROLEUM
1976 OxyLibya (Geologist)
Delineated ancient reefs in the Sirte
Basin and defined carbonate depositional environments which resulted
in commercial field discoveries. Assisted in the development and well
site selection of several major fields. Recommended and drilled
wildcat drilling prospects. Conducted pilot study to determine if
carbon dioxide could provide uncontaminated, economic quantities for
secondary recovery. Trained in hydrocarbon detections using
mudlogging and flame ionization detectors. Supervised drilling
operations including gas, fluids and cuttings analysis from the well
bore to disposal. Drilled and analyzed subsurface cores and
supervised Schlumberger logging and Halliburton drill stem tests.
1977 OxyLibya - N. Africa (Sr.
Geologist) Trained and supervised well-site geologists and
hydrologists. Mapped oil field structures to select and monitor
development wells. Recommended against acquisition of oil and gas
fields offshore Tunisia due to risks of hydrogen sulfide leaks on
adjacent population centers. Evaluated carbon dioxide reservoirs for
secondary recovery operations. Headed team of Libyan ground water
hydrologists using Landsat data to investigate the cause and
environmental impact of pressure drops in water wells which resulted
in the discovery of a major new potable aquifer in the western
desert. Supervised hydrocarbon detections using mudlogging and flame
ionization detectors. Drilled and analyzed subsurface cores and
directed Schlumberger logging and Halliburton production test crews.
TENNECO
– Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company
1978 –1980 Houston (Sr. Geologist)
Developed a model to predict location
and time of growth of salt structures which led to several wildcat
discoveries. Generated successful prospects in Texas, Louisiana,
Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida through the integration of
gravity, aeromagnetics, seismic, log analysis and geochemistry.
!980 – 1985 Houston (Division
Geologist)
Managed $20 million exploration
drilling budget and responsible for the operation of 10 wildcat wells
per year. Directed 16 professionals and staff and responsible for the
quality of their recommendations. Supervised the development of
computer-generated paleoenvironmental maps showing prospective
hydrocarbon fairways. Assisted in the design and successful operation
of a state-of-the-art, biostratigraphic laboratory. Provided career
planning, and performance evaluation of geological and
paleontological staff. Led the evaluation of the Texas State Lease
Sales and Houston Oil and Minerals merger. Conducted geochemical
study of hydrocarbon source rocks in outcrop and directed an offshore
survey.
1985 - 1989 Tenneco - International Div. – Houston (Staff
Geologist)
Generated exploration drilling prospects and obtained management
approval to acquire acreage in eight countries including Indonesia,
Malaysia, Pakistan, India, Madagascar, Australia and Papua New
Guinea. Conducted successful contract negotiations for production
sharing contracts, joint ventures and service contracts. Delineated
distribution of sand reservoirs utilizing seismic facies analysis and
other seismic stratigraphic principles. Assisted in budget
coordination, corporate planning and strategy development. Developed
a plan to anticipate which countries would offer international lease
sales two years in advance, Designated as Key Staff Advisor in the
presentation and sale of the company’s International assets to five
separate multi-national corporations resulting in more than $5
billion in sales.
ENRON Oil and Gas
(EOG Resources)
1989 – 1990 Enron Oil Int'l - Houston (Regional Exploration
Coordinator)
Responsible for coordination and operation of Enron Asia-Pacific
exploration activities. Duties included regional basin analysis,
acreage evaluation, prospect generation and strategic planning. Also
analyzed competitor activity in the region and prepared reports of
attractive acreage opportunities. Initially worked as consultant to
assess potential of Malaysia and Pakistan concessions. Proposed and
budgeted a marine geochemical and seismic study in offshore Sabah,
Malaysia.
1990 - 1992 - Enron Oil Malaysia Inc., Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia (Exploration Manager)
Responsible for coordination and strategic planning for all
Asia-Pacific oil and gas exploration activities. Developed
exploration strategies using seismic, remote sensing and geochemical
analyses. Primary function involved supervision of the exploration
program in Malaysia and Indonesia. Also responsible for the
generation of prospects and economic evaluations throughout Asia.
Worked with government oil companies on bid tendering, budget
approvals and negotiation for work commitment and 5 year plans.
Acquired seismic and gravity surveys and supervised Environmental
Impact Assessment (EIA) and site surveys. Prepared well prognosis and
logging programs for the drilling of two offshore wells and planned
the well programs for and supervised two onshore wildcats.
Responsible for well-site evaluation and post-drill interpretation of
four wells.
ECODRILL
1992/-1994 - Ecodrill Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur (Geological
Consultant)
Evaluated prospective acreage for Canadian and US companies
interested in Far East acquisitions. Created and marketed farmout and
joint venture oil and gas packages to potential investors. Managed
personnel search and placement services for the Petrochemical
Industry and facilitated training for entry-level employees. Prepared
and evaluated tender documents for well-evaluation personnel and
services. Contracted to US and Australian companies (i.e. WMC, now
BHP) for wellsite supervision and geological operations for 4 wildcat
wells.
PARES (Petroleum
and Reservoir Engineering Services)
1994 - 1996 - PARES Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Technical
Director) ,
Prepared petroleum reserve evaluations for investors in the
Asia-Pacific region and recommended opportunities for equity
participation as well as project management. Technical Advisor to
Petroconsultants Inc. (now IHS) for International Oil and Gas Field
reports. Conducted detailed technical and economic assessments of
under-developed oil fields in the Indus Basin of Pakistan. Involved
with the evaluation of gas fields in the Cambay Basin in India which
significantly increased bookable reserves. Completed the post-drill
evaluation, transition and reports for Enron Oil Malaysia.
Contributed to the development of undeveloped reserves in the N.
Malay Basin near the Vietnam border. One of the first Americans
allowed to explore for oil inside Vietnam following the lifting of
the post-war embargo.
At the conclusion of my commitment to Enron Oil, I returned to the
U.S and left the Oil and Gas industry for good. I then immediately
began working for environmental organizations.
GREENPEACE
1996 – 1997 Greenpeace- Boston,
MA. (Campaigner / Fundraiser)
Participated in projects and actions to
support the Energy, Toxics, and Sustainable Fisheries Campaigns.
Coordinated all research in the office and was key contributor on
several publications. Mapped Essential Fish Habitats for a number of
fish species from geological and fisheries survey data. As fisheries
campaigner, participated in regional fisheries council meetings and
provided testimony, which aided in passage of federal legislation to
ban Factory Trawlers on the East Coast. Conducted public lectures on
Whaling and Protection of Marine Mammals.
COMMCORP
1999 - 2005 Commonwealth Corporation –
Boston, MA. (Development Specialist/ Outreach Coordinator)
Wrote grants and developed Marine
Technology and Trades career ladders and training programs.
Developed and distributed outreach materials about retraining and
social services for displaced fishermen and spouses. Coordinated and
analyzed success of fish quality improvement program in
Massachusetts. Instrumental in developing collaborative research
programs in New England. Wrote and coordinated successful Pollution
Grant to study Massachusetts fishing grounds. Conducted needs
assessment and community audit of North Shore communities. Presented
position papers on Safety, Disaster Assistance, and fisheries
legislation. Helped fishermen attain affordable health insurance.
Served as industry advisor to the Habitat Committee of the New
England Fishery Management Council. Created and maintained
fishermen’s websites for habitat preservation and lobster
conservation.

Managed 20 professional abstractors and
responsible for quality control. Maintained and tested database of
more than 300,000 publications and magazines. Authority for 2000
technical journals on environment and health in four languages.
Evaluated auto-summarizers and extractors from a 6 million keyword
index and created Global Warming online database.

Taught Geology along with Physical and World Geography to college
students. Prepared approved curriculum for new courses on
Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and Introduction to

Greenlite Consultants – Mass.- Arkansas (Environmental
Consultant)
Prepared maps and evidence for natives
of Ecuador in their environmental justice suit against Amazon
pollution. Conducted risk analysis and provided expert testimony in
case involving an oil spill in Massachusetts. Evaluated Proposed
Remedial Action Plans (PRAPs) for Superfund cleanup and brownfields
along Hudson River. Conducted successful campaign regarding
construction of the world's longest undersea gas pipeline from Canada
to the US. Evaluated safety and risk factors for offshore Liquefied
Natural Gas (LNG) terminals near Boston, MA. Worked as investigative
journalist and environmental columnist for “Commonsense”
newspaper and “NativeGloucester” web magazines. . Successfully
campaigned to extend the Canadian Moratorium on Oil and Gas Drilling
Offshore Georges Bank. Conducted training seminars on alternative
energy scenarios in the Northeast for the Sierra Club and other
environmental groups. Served as Vice-chairman on the Executive
Committee of the Arkansas Sierra Club. Campaigned against the
Keystone XL Pipeline and created videos and Apps to build support.
